Anthony Robbins (Tony Robbins) is one of the most recognized personalities in NLP. He is an outstanding marketer and media personality. He has probably contributed the most to the popularization of Neuro-Linguistic Programming, writing books, appearing on infomercials, television (where he demonstrated The NLP Phobia Treatment), radio, and in the comedy Shallow Hal.

Here is his TED talk – Why we do what we do

His work incorporates and extends many NLP Techniques and principles. In the early 80’s he became famous for his firewalking seminars, developed at the suggestion of NLP co-founder and then mentor John Grinder, based on NLP Modeling.

Two of his well-known books are

Some of Tony Robbins’ ideas in NLP

  • The root of all human problems is behavior.
  • Behavior and actions are driven by our states, particularly emotional states and physiology.
  • Our lives are shaped by our everyday decisions – it’s not what we do once in a while that matters, but what we do consistently.
  • You can learn by making mistakes.
  • Making a commitment to long-term results rather than short-term fixes is one of the most important decisions we can make.
  • Commitment is about cutting yourself off from other possibilities.
  • Making rapid decisions is about being clear on values.
  • A strong enough “why” will enable you to achieve almost anything.
  • Most people have lots of ways to feel bad, but only a few ways to feel good.

Controversy

He has been criticized for:

  • Use of kinesiology.
  • The idea that there is something wrong with you that needs to be fixed and that he conveniently has the answer.
  • Attempting to make NLP his own under a different name.
  • The hypocrisy of getting divorced while touting seminars for the perfect marriage.
  • His ideas about health and diet (such as food combining) as well as the validity of some research presented in his book Unlimited Power.

People have been suing him about misrepresenting the potential earnings of franchises for his motivational seminars and copyright infringement relating to the book “Wall Street Money Machine”

Worth Modeling

His marketing and public relations achievements are surely worth modeling as well as his ability to develop practical and popular applications of NLP. He seeks high-profile publicity like his association with Bill Clinton and other political and entertainment industry celebrities.

Anthony Robbins has a strong orientation to contribution and is the founder of the Anthony Robbins Foundation.

Tony Robbins is one of the most recognized personalities in Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) today. Here are some of his ideas and patterns.

Beliefs

Beliefs are our way of generalizing reality. They create a sense of certainty and we rarely question them. They are usually based on large numbers of emotionally charged experiences.

Consider also that a “belief” is a Nominalization – the process of believing something that gets turned into a fixed thing that we call a belief. Tony Robbins belief change process involves associating pain to beliefs and pleasure to new beliefs, and is part of his technique of Neuro Associative Conditioning – see Awaken the Giant Within

Motivation

Studies have shown that behaviorism (use of positive and negative reinforcements) only works for a limited time. Neuro Associative Conditioning uses a variable schedule of reinforcement and concepts such as the jackpot principle.

Questions

The use of quality questions is a powerful aspect of Tony Robbin’s training. Different questions can create doubt, change focus, and change what we delete. A different question can also change what resources we notice. For instance “why does this always happen to me?” Is very different from “what can I do to change this?”

Words

Particular words that we habitually use can have a huge impact on our quality of life. By lowering or increasing the intensity of emotionally charged words, we can change our experience.

For instance, try saying to yourself “I am utterly enraged about this situation” and then “I am a bit peeved about this situation” and notice the difference in how it feels. He also considers that you can adopt the emotional patterns of other people by using their words.

Metaphors

We use metaphors every day. Learning is the process of making new associations. Metaphors can assist learning by creating links between the known and the unknown.

However, metaphors also contain limiting beliefs, rules, and preconceptions. The metaphors that we use affect the way we see life. Is business like thrashing your way through a jungle, or farming the world’s abundance?
