Whether you have a few gray hairs to cover, or you want to make a minor change in your hair color, home hair dye kits are the most affordable way to accomplish this. ?
BEFORE you think about using one of the hair dye kits, take time to decide what your goal is—most professionals, including expert colorist Sharon Dorram, do not recommend using an at-home kit to lighten or darken more than two shades.
If you have decided that your desired hair color is achievable using one of the at-home kits, it is important to do everything you can to protect your hair before and during the process as well as the result. ✔
Following these simple tips will leave you with hair that is silky, gorgeous and that will retain the color for much longer than normal.
Start With Well-moisturized Hair
Hair that is soft and moisturized ahead of time will not only be more likely to stay that way after going through the dyeing process, but it will more readily accept the hair color, leading to less fading.
Make sure you condition regularly, and you may consider a special conditioning masque or hot oil treatment the day before you plan to dye your hair.
Dye Clean, Unwashed Hair
While you do not want to apply dye to dirty hair, it will help if your hair has some of its natural oil before you dye it.
A good solution is to wash your hair the night before then dye it in the morning ☀
That way some of the oils will have returned, but you will not have a buildup of styling products. Brushing your hair before you start can help distribute those natural oils throughout.
Do the Strand Test
It can be very tempting to skip the strand test step on the hair dye instructions. However, this can lead to problems. Not only will you have a better idea of the color results of the dye, but you will be able to see if the particular dye dries out your hair or causes excess breakage. Each formula has different effects on different hair.
Apply from the Roots
Always start applying from the roots and work your way down. The roots are the most moisturized, least likely to break, and most likely most in need of color.
Condition the Tips
If your hair is particularly dry or you have split ends, apply a bit of conditioner to the tops of your hair (and do not rinse it out) before you start conditioning.
You may not get quite as much coverage this way, but your hair will be well-protected.
Rinse, Don’t Wash
When it comes time to rinse the dye out, do not shampoo. You are just rinsing away the excess dye; you do not want to do anything to fade the pigment before it has had time to set. Waiting at least a day (and longer if possible) before washing will lock in the color.
Use Products for Color-Treated Hair
This can make a big difference when it comes to making hair color last.
There are many products out there at all price ranges, but they are all formulated to be less likely to fade dyed hair.
Consider a Glaze or Color Boost
Instead of dying your hair as often, try a glaze or color boost between dye jobs. This can make your color last longer without providing the extra stress that death causes. Many of these glazes are created especially to help improve the condition of the hair even as it boosts your color.
Stay Cool
When you shower or bathe, use lukewarm or cooler water to wash and rinse your hair. Hot water is the most damaging to your hair and encourages your dyed hair to fade more quickly.
Also, use as little water as possible on your hair. Letting the water run down your hair after you have washed and rinsed is just another cause of fading.
As you can see, there are many things you can do to help your hair remain soft and shiny, even if you do dye it at home.
Additionally many of these tips will help make your hair color last longer and look its best ✨
Whether you are dying your hair for “fun”, or because you have roots that you need to cover.
Taking a few extra precautions will pay off and leave you with hair that will inspire compliments everywhere you go.
